WEEK 2 - 3 Project 1a part 1: Physical Collage Design
Lecture 2 - Intro to Composition
- In the 2nd lecture, Mr. Fauzi exposed us to the basic of composition in photography and collage such as: Rules of Third, Golden Ratio, Composition framing & cropping. The aim of this task is to develop a theme/idea with layers of images with design principles and fundamental of composition.
NOTES:
1) Intro to Basic Composition
- FOCAL POINT - Helps viewers' eyes naturally settle on the important pieces of your design first.
- SCALE & HIERARCHY - Scale helps communicate hierarchy by drawing attention toward and away from certain elements, signifying their importance.
- BALANCING ELEMENTS - each element have a 'weight' to it. eg: Smaller objects weigh less than larger ones. Heavily textured elements weigh more than flat elements.
- WHITE SPACE - "empty space" to balance the main focus of composition. Helps the design to breathe. Increases clarity and overall look by balancing the busy parts of the composition.
RULE OF THIRDS:
- the process of dividing an image into thirds, using two horizontal and two vertical lines. This imaginary grid yields nine parts with four intersection points.
- Use composition techniques that are in line with what’s naturally pleasing to the eye.
- Creatively use negative space.
- Create conversation between the subject and background.
GOLDEN RATIO:

COLLAGE PROCESS IN CLASS...
During class, we first started cutting objects and elements we
want from our magazines. Afterwards, Mr. Fauzi taught me how to
step-by-step compose a good collage using layering technique. He
told me to put the largest element first, the medium sized ones
and finally small ones to make a good flow of the collage. In my
collage I want it to talk about what's n my mind such as:
Travelling, architecture, my cat and time (since i a always
worried about time management) :).
Mr. Fauzi showed us a short video tutorial on how to make the
collage:
He then told all of us to create 3 different compositions of the
physical collage. After we made the 3 different compositions, we had
to scan and submit a photo on google classroom. Mr. Fauzi will then
choose the 1 best final composition for us to further improve before
we proceed sticking the final chosen composition next week. Here are
the photos....
My 3 Pre-Compositions...
PRE-COMPOSITION #1
Feedbacks:
Sir told me that I should make the girl as the main focal point, use
leading lines to make the collage have a story and a flow. He also
told me that it's good to put torn white magazine text papers behind
so that the layers and objects on top of it will be in contrast and
will stand out more.
WEEK 3
Lecture 3 - Introduction To Photoshop
- In the 3rd lecture, sir introduced us to the basic tools for Adobe Photoshop which was to help us in our next week's task which is our digital collage (next post on DPI Week 4) such as: Lasso tool, Pen tool, and layering. He also gave us several video tutorials to watch for further understanding.
NOTES:
- Selection & Layering - layer interface
- Toolbox - Expand to reveal more additional tools
- Lasso Tool - to draw, select and pinpoint specific areas of object for cutting and pasting objects
- Bezier Game to get used to the Pen tool when creating path to make straight and curvy lines.
- Layers - Different images stacked on top of each other. We use each layer without affecting another one to make or add adjustments.
- MY FINAL COLLAGE -
This is my final pasted collage composition. The work overall talks about my mind and how random it can be from worrying about time management, traveling, shopping, my cat, and singing. I used leading lines and the rule of third for this composition as what I was taught during Mr Fauzi's lecture. The focal point is the girl, and so the viewer's eyes will travel in a loop from the top left and so on (anti-clockwise direction), each having a story....
WEEK 1-3 REFLECTION
Overall, I really enjoyed and had so much fun doing this physical
collage work. I learnt so much about how important composition is
in design. I learnt so much more on how i can apply design
principles, rule of thirds, leading lines and using golden ratio
in my collage. I realised that when making collages I need to make
sure that the design leads the viewer's eyes in an orderly manner
so they know what story i'm trying to convey in the collage.
Moreover, in the 3rd lecture i was happy to have been introduced
to Adobe photoshop and how to use layers and pen tool which was to
prepare us for our next Digital Collage work next week (refer to
next DPI Week 4 post) .
'The Show' Mural Competition @Starhill 6/10/2024
There was a graduate showcase event at Starhill, Bukit Bintang
organized by Taylor's Design School. So we design students were
encouraged by our lecturers to attend it since there was a Mural Art
Competition on the theme 'Unity and Diversity'.
Many students from Taylors took part in the competition like:
Foundation in Design, Bachelors in Creative media design, fashion
design students and even some from other programmes. I was in a group
of 8 with my foundation in design friends. We were given 2 A2 papers
and had to make a mural drawing/coloured drawing, painting about Unity
in Diversity. We were given a duration of only 2 hours to make it.
Unfortunately, my group didn't win but it's ok. We had so much laughs
and fun together making it and the fact that our artwork looked
hilarious. I am happy that I got the experience to join this
competition. Everyone's work was amazing! The winning groups really
deserved it so much!
FURTHER BOOK READING:
1) Understanding Abode Photoshop: Digital Imaging Concepts and
Techniques - by Richard Harrington
I read this book and ut's a very helpful book especially since im a
beginner in using Photoshop. It teaches you the fundamental digital imaging techniques in Adobe
Photoshop and Photoshop Elements that you'll need to succeed both in
the classroom and the workforce. While many Photoshop books focus on
features, tools, or techniques, this book covers both the basics and
delves into specific skills, tricks, and uses in multimedia. Richard
Harrington covers digital imaging basics (correcting, editing,
sharpening, retouching, and presenting photos) and shows you
real-world projects and exercises, including: digital painting,
designing a CD/DVD label, magazine cover, and creating Web
sites/animations.
2) Digital Photography Complete Course - by David Taylor
I loved this book so much! It taught me the fundamentals, basic
principles of photography and how to use all the camera tools and
settings such as ISO, Apertures, Shutter speed and more. I also learnt
about all the types of composition and rules in
photography. This photography book will show you how to control and understand
every element of your camera. With the aid of simple text and
innovative graphics, you'll explore a wide variety of photography
skills and genres. Find out how to create landscapes, portraits, still
life, and action shots as you discover the full range of your
camera.
