Mansion'
Lecture 5 - Basic Photography shooting
- In the 5th lecture, Mr. Fauzi introduced us to digital
photography, lighting types and do's & don'ts.
Double Exposure & Image Blending Mode
- Double exposure - merging multiple images to make them surreal, emotional, or humorous.
- Tilt-Shift - PS transform your photos into soft works of art. To add this feature, go to Filter > Blur Gallery > Tilt-Shift.
- Fake reflection
- Experiment with simple portraits and details textured - Combining something plain with something complicated will give you a balanced result.
- Convert photo to BnW - strengthen the emotions in your double-exposure images. If you want to express your work in a vulnerable way, experiment with this.
- Silhouettes - Fun to do for eg: a border shape of a person's face but inside it there are mountains instead of the face.
- Make simple objects look fascinating
- Use shadows - adds drama and story
Photoshop Blending Modes:
- Eg: Select the Layer 1 (Fire) to be on top of the Background (Musicians)
- Go to the Blending Modes option
- Select “Screen”
- As a result, all of the pixels on the fire will be selected as Screen blending mode.

EXTRA VIDEO FOR STUDIO SHOOTING:
PRACTICAL EXERCISE PART 1 - SHAZAM
Mr. Fauzi gave us slides for the instructions for us to do our
'Hearst Mansion' work digital imaging exercise. This exercise
covers:
1) Quick Selection Tool
2) Layer Mask
3) Filters
4) Colour Correction
Progress:
1) Use Quick Selection tool to subtract background.
SHORTCUT KEYS: Zoom in/out, increase/decrease brush size, subtract from
selection/ add to selection.
1) ADD LAYER MASK
2) APPLY LAYER MASK
Drag & Drop SHAZAM to HEARST MANSION, RESIZE SHAZAM and
reposition. SHORTCUT KEYS: Free Transform mode, Maintain Aspect Ratio (HOLD
the SHIFT button on your keyboard to rescale the layer)...
Adjust colour correction: MATCH COLOUR (Image → Adjustments)
Create SHADOW for SHAZAM
- Create NEW LAYER (and rename as Shadow)
- Use BRUSH TOOL
- Draw a black shadow on the background of SHAZAM’s layer
I made shadow using black brush and reduced opacity to 63%
Apply gaussian Blur effect to the shadow layer
Create NEW LAYER to make SHAZAM’s reflection.
- SHORTCUT KEYS: POLYGONAL LASSO Tool and then Mask
- Duplicate the SHAZAM’s layer
- Rename the layer as reflection
Adjust the colour correct for reflection layer: HUE/SATURATION
(Image → Adjustments)
Apply RIPPLE filter to SHAZAM’s reflection layer...

PART 2 - My Reflection
Our 2nd task was to use our own photo to do the Hearst Mansion
exercise like the above using the same instructions and tools
previously.

Week 1-5 OVERALL REFLECTION
Overall, my experience during these 5 weeks, was personally
enjoyable, the classes as well as the process of working on
the project, especially composing the collages. I found the
lectures to be very easily digestible. I particularly enjoyed
composing the physical collages as I could express myself
through it. What I found a bit difficult was the first digital
imaging exercise as I have never worked on Photoshop that much
before, even though in my foundation year I did.
I am really happy that in these 5 weeks I learnt a lot about
basics of Composition and using Rule of Thirds and Golden
ratio and more. I learnt a lot more on how to use new tools
and adjustments on Adobe Photoshop. It's really fun doing
photoshop for the Shazam exercise. Im happy to have learnt
more on using blur effects, masking and adjustments tool to
make things look more realistic. I have slowly gotten used to
the shortcut keys as well.
Something I observed is that I am able to better work after
looking at references for inspiration – starting from nothing
is something I usually struggle with. I also noticed that the
weekly check-ins helped me be more productive and
procrastinate less.
