W10 Lecture notes - Intro to After Effects
  • Adobe After Effects is a 2.5D animation software used for animation, visual effects, and motion picture compositing.
  • After Effects is used in film, TV, and web video creation.
  • This software is used in the post-production phase, and has hundreds of effects that can be used to manipulate imagery. This allows you to combine layers of video and images into the same scene.

  • Compositing Layers in Photoshop
    • Photoshop is a platform to compositing the layers.
    • All the layers need to be arrange and rename accordingly so that it will be organize and easy to be animated in After Effects.
    • Adobe After Effects is a digital visual effects, motion graphics, and compositing application. We can import elements such as images, video, vector and more into After Effects.
    • All the layer elements need to be organized and synchronized to the external software platforms such as Photoshop & Illustrator.
    • After Effects files does not embed its media, it links to it.

 Week 10 Exercise

In this week, Mr. Fauzi introduced us to After Effects in order to help us in our next task next week. For this week we had to do 1 exercise on After Effects. We learnt how to link Adobe Photoshop layers into After Effects as well as understanding the compositing concept from still images to moving images. During class he shared us live demo on After Effects.

Sir gave us this video for us to watch on After Effects keyframes demo:

 INSTRUCTIONS:
  • We have to Import the W10_ANIMATE.psd into Adobe After Effects.
  • Create a composition setting 1080 px (Width) x 1920 px (Height), Duration 15 second
  • Create a keyframe animation to the layers using Position (P), Scale (S) & Masking path.
  • Render output: Quicktime (.MOV) or .MP4
  • Upload exercise into our Youtube Channel.
  • Update your progress and video to E-Portfolio blog.
  • Attach E-Portfolio link on this Submission.

 PROGRESS

1) Firstly, I uploaded the PSD file to After Effects and dragged it to the canvas

2) Then, we had to first animate the first circle element, to make it rotate using keyframes and making sure the position ends at the same point as where it also started since it is a loop video.

3) After that, I animated the second circle, this time by moving its SCALE using the keyframes as well.

4) Lastly, I animated the fish, moving its position up and down in the loop.

5) Finally we save it as .mov or mp4 and rendered it to save.

NOTES: Mr fauzi said that our next task to animate our poster on Ae should not look too complicated. Just make simple animations on the elements we've made.

 FINAL RESULT:

 Reflection:

Overall, since this is my first ever time using and opening After Effects, I think it is really an interesting software. Knowing that this program is used in almost all movie is pretty cool. At first, seeing how the program looked like scared me so much because it looks really technical, but i'm sure that as I go ahead and deeper into design ill get used to it more with more practise and self-exploration. I love how Ae can make our poster and work look alive and looks more real by animating them in several ways.
