 FINAL REFLECTION:

1) Experience:
  • Throughout the advanced typography module, I have learned and discovered many new aspects of typography and font design. This module challenged me to expand my skillset and gain hands-on experience in creating original typefaces. Honestly, it was quite time-consuming and demanding at times, making it one of the heavier modules I have taken. However, despite these challenges, it was a very fulfilling experience. I received a great deal of guidance and constructive feedback from Mr. Vinod, which helped me deepen my understanding and improve my skills significantly. Many of the tasks involved creating original fonts, such as extracting letterforms from images and developing complete typefaces, as well as applying typography creatively in projects like movie posters. I enjoyed the creative process and felt proud of the final outcomes. Completing the final task of designing an original letterform was especially satisfying and gave me a sense of accomplishment. Lastly, the assignments in this module provided an opportunity for me to work with a wider variety of design software, including After Effects, Photoshop, Illustrator, and FontForge, enabling me to learn new tools that will be valuable for my future projects. Overall, this module has been a valuable journey in advancing my typography knowledge and design capabilities.

2) Observations:
  • While doing this module, I observed that typography is not just about choosing fonts but about understanding the anatomy of letterforms and how subtle design decisions affect readability and visual impact. I noticed how different styles of typography convey distinct emotions and messages, making the choice of typeface crucial in design communication. Additionally, working on original font creation highlighted the importance of consistency, attention to detail, and the iterative process of refinement. The feedback sessions were particularly helpful in pinpointing areas for improvement that I had initially overlooked. I observed that you need a lot of time to make just one letter.

3) Findings:
  • I found that making a font is very very time consuming and hard as there has to always be slight adjustments needed to be made to each letter. Maintaining consistency in font design is really important as well. I also found that guides and grids are really important when we are in the process of creating our typefaces. Crafting a functional and aesthetically pleasing font requires both technical precision and artistic intuition. I found that practice and experimentation are essential for mastering typography, as well as being open to critique and continuous learning. Another important insight is that typography greatly influences the overall tone and effectiveness of visual communication, making it a powerful tool in design. This module has inspired me to further explore type design and consider its role more thoughtfully in my future projects.
