 LECTURES

Storyboard

Storyboard in filmmaking is a visual representation of a film, animation, or video game, much like a comic strip. It's made up of a series of illustrations or images displayed in sequence for the purpose of pre-visualizing a motion picture, animation, motion graphic or interactive media sequence.

Storyboards are used to plan shots, understand the narrative flow, and to communicate ideas to the production team. They can include details such as camera angles, character movements, dialogue, and even notes about special effects or sound. This helps the director, cinematographer, and other crew members visualise the scenes and prepare for the shooting process.

Storyboarding is a crucial part of the pre-production process because it allows filmmakers to experiment with different visual approaches, identify potential problems, and make necessary adjustments before the actual filming begins, saving time and resources.

 Module Brief:

1. TASK 1: Audio - Sound for Visual (dubbing) 15%

- Choose or record sound clips to be used to create sound effects to bring a video clip to live. The clips will be provided. Students are required to identify the visual components from the video clip that needs sound.

We were given a 36 seconds clip (muted no sound) of a scene from the movie: "Everything, Everywhere All at Once". Mr. Martin told us all to make a spreadsheet first and plan the sounds and types of sound affects/ambience and dialogues we need to put in the video. After that, we have to research online for the sound effects and paste the link so that later on it's easier and faster for us to compile all the audio files into adobe premiere pro.

 2. TASK 2: Audio – Sound Shaping 15%

Week 8

- Students will be given a choice of scenarios and they have to pick one and create the soundscape for the chosen scenario.

- We have to record our own voice speaking in our own language for 10 seconds for Project 1 Exercise 2 sound shaping. We used Adobe Audition Software for this task.

  1. Voice of phone call.
  2. Voice coming from inside of the closet.
  3. Underground cave.
  4. Alien/ Orc voice

Process in Adobe Audition:

Effect rack → Filter & EQ → Parametric Equalizer

1) Phone Call - Bring down BASS, TREBLE, raise MID RANGE between 500Hz  to 2kHz.

2) Muffled Inside closet - BASS remain, TREBLE to the bottom, raise MID RANGE to top.

3) Reverb echo in cave - BASS remain, TREBLE to the bottom, raise MID RANGE to top.

4) Use Stretch preset for alien - play around with it

 Reflection

Experience:
To sum up, from all these 2 tasks of sound dubbing and sound shaping, I found it really cool and interesting. I got to experiment different tools on the Adobe softwares to increase and decrease pitches. Moreover, the sound dubbing was abit challenging especially the part where I have to edit my voice to be lower to match Waymond's voice. However, putting in the sound effects at the right timings were quite fun to do. I had to listen really carefully everytime I attached the audios, making sure it is working correctly in the correct pace. t was fun identifying and taking notes on what sound effects I should put based on watching the muted video at first. Next, the sound shaping was quite easy and fun to do since all I had to do was just to record my voice and edit them 4 times using Audition tools.

Observations:
I found that sounds are really important in movies and all productions as that is one important thing to set the entire mood for the overall video/movie. it creates the drama and tension, so choosing the right sound effects is important.

Findings:
I find that there really is so much tools we can use to edit our voices, sounds using Adobe audition. As someone who have just learnt to use the software, I found that there's much more tools to be explored there when it comes to editing voices and sounds.
