Digital Surrealism:
- Realism - Takes subject matters of the ordinary and common world which we call "reality." It almost always takes a non-exotic and non-extraordinary subject matter and theme. There is no need to think outside of the box, as that is not "real."
- Surrealism - It explores the subconscious mind, with subject matters concentrating on dream-images and often aims to distort the ordinary and what we call reality
- Surrealism defies logic. Dreams and the workings of the subconscious mind inspire surrealistic art (French for "super-realism") filled with strange images and bizarre juxtapositions.
- Dream-like scenes and symbolic images
- Unexpected, illogical juxtapositions
- How to Create 'Surrealism' artworks?
- 1. Capture a dream, sketch It out. Draw your vision out roughly. Don't put any details yet, but just lay out key points of your vision.
- 2. Find Reference Images & gather images that directly relate to what you have in mind.
- Surrealism is best when it's convincing enough that it could be real, however we obviously know that the subject matter you are creating is nonexistent, thus is not real.
PROJECT 2B:
Poster Design "Quotes of the Day"
This project submission is for both IVN &
DPI module. However, marks for the text, vector
graphics and typography of the poster is for IVN
module and DPI module focuses on our composition
using elements of photography.
We had to create an A4 sized poster using
ILLUSTRATOR of a Photo and Text. We had to choose
a daily Quote we like. I chose: "What is coming is
better than what is gone". Firstly, we had to do
our research on that quote meaning.
Week 8 (ILW) Research and References:
Design Concept Summary:
QUOTE: “What is coming is better than what is gone”
I chose this quote because it carries an optimistic message,
suggesting that the future holds greater potential or greater
rewards than what has been experienced in the past. It's a
reminder that even though the past may have had its highs or
moments of fulfillment, there is hope and anticipation for
something even better to come. This can be applied to many
aspects of life, such as personal growth, relationships, career
prospects, or even general life circumstances. It encourages
looking forward with optimism, rather than dwelling on what has
already passed. Moreover, this quote always reminds me to stop
carrying the negative things that has past and focus on the
future because that’s what matters most.
The central theme of the quote is hope, optimism, and idea of
new beginnings. The design will have CONTRAST which is important
to communicate that the future is brighter, more promising, and
full of potential. I want to include reflections, overlays and
double-exposure using my portrait and other pictures I took and
merge it.
Contrasting Imagery: Use different photo elements to represent
the past and the future:
- Past (What is Gone): dark, black-and-white image associated with loss, endings.
- Future (What is Coming): more vibrant/colourful image, flowers representing growth, new beginnings, or a fresh perspective. For instance, a blooming flower, birds flying, or person walking into the light. The colors should be rich, vibrant, and hopeful. A butterfly emerging from a cocoon, symbolizing transformation and the potential for growth.
- Text idea/concept: For "What is Coming" more bold, modern, and clean to evoke strength and optimism. For "What is Gone" (The Past): the word "Gone" can start fade out like dust, while "Coming" becomes bold and vibrant/standing up.“What is gone” can look like it’s fading, or breaking up and more sad and not colourful as it gets to the bottom part of the poster. “What is Coming should be on top and the biggest text in the poster so it catches people’s attention first, and then the eyes slowly moves to the bottom as the audience read the quotes.
Physical & Digital sketches drafts:
Week 9 Progress
These are the pictures I took and used for the poster:
I took these flower pictures in Cameron Highlands during the
holiday and I wanted the flowers to represent bloom, fresh
feeling and a new and beautiful, hopeful beginning.
I also took a picture of the clouds myself and a flying bird picture.
PROGRESS SCREENSHOTS ON PHOTOSHOP
1) Select and mask - I applied Double Exposure techniques to my photo. I selected and mask the branches photo and got rid of the background first using the selective brush tool.
2) Then I added my portrait and adjusted the curves first and then I got rid of the white background of my face portrait using Remove background tool.
3) I the use Clipping Mask to add 2 photos in my portrait (branch below and on top is the photo of my reflection)
4) After that i used the soft brush tool to smooth the transition of both photos and erased some parts of it to show my face blending with the other photos.
5) Before adding each of the flowers, I select subject and remove the background of it.
6) Then I added Adjustment layers for the flowers to adjust the saturation, brightness and hues.
7) I added 3 coloured circles using the shape tool behind my portrait and using the pen tool i created a white path behind the picture of me standing, going towards the flowers. I also added clouds behind my photo and birds flying.
8) For the background I took a scan of a newspaper scrap and put it as my poster's background.
9) Lastly, I added the texts and typography elements which the progress is shown here in IVN blog post
Final Poster Result:
description:
The quote carries an optimistic message, suggesting that the future holds greater potential or greater rewards than what has been experienced in the past. It's a reminder that even though the past may have had its highs or moments of fulfillment, there is hope and anticipation for something even better to come. This can be applied to many aspects of life, such as personal growth, relationships, career prospects, or even general life circumstances. It encourages looking forward with optimism, rather than dwelling on what has already passed. Moreover, this quote always reminds me to stop carrying the negative things that has past and focus on the future because that’s what matters most. The central theme of the quote is hope, optimism, and idea of new beginnings. The design have a CONTRAST to communicate that the future is brighter, more promising, and full of potential compared to the more ‘dull’ past.
The reflection of me standing, looking at the white path towards the flowers represents new beginnings, with a hopeful and positive feeling of the future. Meanwhile, the bottom part represents the past as it is put in Black & White colour. The roots and branches below shows the past which has past by and give a more negative feeling compared to the top part of the poster.
The word ‘GONE’ also fade away to show that it is disappearing and it looks like the soil from my picture is falling to the ‘GONE’ word. The word ‘COMING’ on the other hand looks vibrant, and more lively to show a bright future ahead.
Reflection:
Overall, I found this task very challenging but at the same time
allowed me to explore way other, and more new tools and techniques
in editing images as well as how to create a good composition. Here
I got to use all the tools that have been taught to us in DPI so far
like using double exposure, masking, removing background, adjustment
layers and way more. Moreover, this project made us think more of
how to express words, since our pictures have to be related and
shows something related to the quote we chose.
It was challenging as this project was merged with IVN so for me
personally, adding the text to the image composition was quite
challenging. However, I enjoyed experimenting and going through the
process and am happy with the result.
Experience - This project was quite hard for me because especially the fact that it's a combination of 2 modules - IVN and DPI. However, because of this task I got to explore and try out more and new tools and effects I've never tried before which is very interesting. Im happy that our lecturers taught us new tools we can use and apply to our poster. In IVN I got to use many tools for my poster which was taught in class like the gradients, 3D Materials, warping/mesh and pen tool. I appreciate sir for helping me with what to add on and how to improve my work.
Observations and Findings - Composition is the most and first important thing when designing anything. I observed that sometimes I don't do enough sketches which causes my work to be lack in good composition. I realise that when making posters, words and its styles are also really important as we have to make sure that the word itself represents or shows what it means. Expressive typography is really important as well in posters.
- In week 9, Mr. Fauzi showed us this video on how to create loop animation for IG stories that would help us in our next week's task:
