MODULE BRIEF :
Class exercise:
During tutorial and practical class, Mr. Hafiz taught us how to use the
Intertwine tool for text on Illustrator and add gradients to it. Other
than that, he also introduced to use how to add 3d effects and materials
on our texts:
-Intertwine-
In class sir gave us an exercise to do on using the Intertwine tool using the Pen tool (leaves) on the text (our name) in illustrator. Then we also learnt on adding gradients on the leaves to give more depth.
STEPS:
- Select 2 or more overlapping objects on the Artboard, use Selection tool to drag a marquee around them.
- Object > Intertwine > Make. Your cursor is now the Lasso tool. Draw around an area you want to manipulate, hover with the Lasso until the shape you want to move is highlighted, and then click.
-Envelope Distort & Pen tool-
We also tried using Envelope Distort and learnt warping texts
during class and had this exercise on 'fish':
Poster Inspirations / references:
I was inspired by these works. I also searched for typographic expressions to give ideas on how to show the meaning of the word itself by just the style of the text and font.
I also love Erik Marinovich's work for example these ones he
made:

Progress on Illustrator and Tools used:

Tools Used to create the typography:
- 3D materials - Inflate
- Warping and Envelope distort
- Pen Tool
- Shape Tool
- Gradient and Shadows
- Grains
1) Draw the white path using pen tool
2) For the 3 red, orange and yellow circles at the back I used
shape tool to make it and added a canvas texture effect on it
3) For the 'WHAT IS' I used the warp and mesh tool to make the
curved look of the text.
4) I then added a textured effect on the text to make it blend a
bit to the composition
5) I typed each letter for 'COMING' using a futura font and added
orange-yellow gradient to all of the letters to give a vibrant and
colourful cheerful look.
5) I applied 3D and Materials effect to the word using the INFLATE
option to add more depth and volume to the text. After that I
adjusted the Lighting position on the text:
6) I also added a textured effect on 'COMING'
8) Added drop shadow (black colour) behind the text so that it pops
out more and looks contrast.
9) For the 'GONE' I used futura font as well as made the layout
look flat at the bottom using the warp and distort mesh tool.
10) I then added a black to white gradient vertically on 'GONE' and
then used POINTILIZE effect to add grains representing the
dust/soil.
11) For the 'what is' below, I added the arch warp tool again to
make it curved
12) Then I added 'Ocean Ripple' distorted texture effect to look like it is going away and destroyed.
13) To make the word 'GONE' look connected to the image above, I
used pen tool and added black to grey gradient colour and added
grain effect to make it look like dust/soil falling from the
photo.
Description:
The quote carries an optimistic message, suggesting that the future
holds greater potential or greater rewards than what has been
experienced in the past. It's a reminder that even though the past
may have had its highs or moments of fulfillment, there is hope and
anticipation for something even better to come. This can be applied
to many aspects of life, such as personal growth, relationships,
career prospects, or even general life circumstances. It encourages
looking forward with optimism, rather than dwelling on what has
already passed. Moreover, this quote always reminds me to stop
carrying the negative things that has past and focus on the future
because that’s what matters most. The central theme of the quote is
hope, optimism, and idea of new beginnings. The design have a
CONTRAST to communicate that the future is brighter, more promising,
and full of potential compared to the more ‘dull’ past.
The reflection of me standing, looking at the white path towards
the flowers represents new beginnings, with a hopeful and positive
feeling of the future. Meanwhile, the bottom part represents the
past as it is put in Black & White colour. The roots and
branches below shows the past which has past by and give a more
negative feeling compared to the top part of the poster.
The word ‘GONE’ also fade away to show that it is disappearing and
it looks like the soil from my picture is falling to the ‘GONE’
word. The word ‘COMING’ on the other hand looks vibrant, and more
lively to show a bright future ahead.
OVERALL REFLECTION
Experience - This project
was quite hard for me because esoecially the fact that it's a
combination of 2 modules - IVN and DPI. However, because of this
task I got to explore and try out more and new tools and effects
I've never tried before which is very interesting. Im happy that
our lecturers taught us new tools we can use and apply to our
poster. In IVN I got to use many tools for my poster which was
taught in class like the gradients, 3D Materials, warping/mesh
and pen tool. I appreciate sir for helping me with what to add
on and how to improve my work.
Observations and Findings
- Composition is the most and first important thing when
designing anything. I observed that sometimes I don't do enough
sketches which causes my work to be lack in good composition. I
realise that when making posters, words and its styles are also
really important as we have to make sure that the word itself
represents or shows what it means. Expressive typography is
really important as well in posters.

Expressive Type - By Alex Fowkes
I Found this book in the library and read a few pages of this
book and found it quite helpful and interesting. There are
plenty of great examples of type designers and artists I got for
some of my inspirations.
