PROJECT 4:
Cinemagraphs "Self-Titled" Video
In this final task, we were to make a 9:16
ratio digital surrealism with moving imagery
artwork based on our self. We were to use
Photoshop and After Effects for
this. Self-titled is an exploration project
to express our own individuality and reflect our
personality into digital art self-expression.
The main idea is to build up self-confidence and
discover our interest.

PROGRESS ON PHOTOSHOP:
Photos I took myself which I used: (only piano, frame and map
background was taken from pinterest and further edited in
photoshop)
1) I selected and mask all the elements and got rid of the
backgrounds first using the selective brush tool.
2) I erased the outer skies to make it inside the frame and erase
part of my shirt to look like my hands are coming out of the
frame.
erasing background using selective tool
3) Adjustment layer to edit the image curves and shadows
4) Used Lasso tool to cut my head open and then used the
ellipse circle shape tool to make the oval for the
hole....
5) Erased the background of all other elements as well and the
flowers and used Warp mesh tool to make the flowers curve
abit
6) Adjustment layer to edit the image curves and shadows
Feedbacks & improvements:
- Sir said that it was all good but he told me to remove the head cutting out because it doesn't really look good and he told me to add more flower on top of my head instead, so it looks like a crown on my head
- I exported the psd file to After Effects and animated some of the elements. I used keyframes and transform tool such as Rotation, Scale, Anchor, Position as well as tracking tool. Then I added the audio music...

"Serenade of Wanderlust"
The concept behind this is a surrealism that blends the whimsical and boundless nature of imagination with the profound connection between music and travel. The floating objects—such as the paper boat, the vintage tram on the piano keys, and the flowers blooming from the subject's head—represent the fluidity of creativity, memories, and emotions sparked by journeys through sound and places. Overall, the poster show that I find peace and joy in exploring, seeking new things as well as doing what i love (music and travels).
I did a vintage styled surrealism poster, the concept is about travels and music as my passion and how it keeps me happy and at peace. I am an adventurous person who loves exploring the world so much and I love music. I used to be part of performing arts choir.
This world is vast and there’s so many unexplored beauties around us and many things to do. I always want to feel confident and proud of my hobbies and what my passions are, and not shy. Secondly, I want to show that we should step out of our comfort zone more and go outside and explore new places. The focal point is my face. The sky inside the vintage frame symbolizes dreams and confidence and me popping out of the frame with my hands closing my face shows that i’m happy and eager of exploring more things. My head with flowers popping out like a crown on top represents happiness and joy because music and travel is something which makes me happy. Surrounding the frame, there a curvy piano like a path and music notes, visualizing my passion in music. The tram looks like it is riding on the piano which represents travelling. The camera, tickets and moon with paper boat on it also represents exploration and travelling. The background is an old vintage brown map paper which symbolises travelling as well.
“Travel opens the door to new worlds, and music becomes the
soundtrack of our journey—together, they inspire the soul to
dream, wander, and truly live."
Reflection:
Experience - Overall, I really loved this final project because it lets us talk about ourselves and this work is about us. I learnt new stuffs and techniques such as using After Effects to animate the objects and move them around to make it alive. I had fun experimenting with the tools in AE such as the keyframes, puppet tool and tracking. I also got to use all my skills in using Photoshop to edit images which i've been taught since week 1 of DPI. It was a very fun project as a final assignment and it is really fun to make and made me become more creative in making a surrealistic work and then animating it.
Observations and Findings - Composition is important firstly. I remember sir would always tell us that in any composition, make sure you have a main focal point which attracts the viewers' eyes first. And then surrounding it is the supporting elements relating to the main object. I found that playing around with animations on a flat artwork makes it look more alive and interesting to view. As a first-timer in making surrealism work, I found it abit tricky at first but then it got really fun as I get more creative in ideating the work.
