 MODULE BRIEF

TASK 3: Final Artwork (Development & Design)

Instructions:
  1. Select one of the 3 ideas you proposed in Task 2.
  2. Develop it through colour exploration, composition, typeface, positioning, etc., with design principles in mind.
  3. Finalise your idea.
  4. Create your final design in A4 size, JPEG format in at least 300dpi pixel size. Label the design as <Your Name_Title of Design_Task 3>
  5. Write a 200-word rationale explaining/defending: i) the decisions made in your design, ii.) the meaning/purpose of the design and iii) the design principles that are employed to create the design.
  6. Include feedback from your lecturer.

FEEDBACKS:
  • Mr Fauzi said my work is good, but he advised me to add some text/quotes into the artwork to show more of its meaning. So here I've added a quote for the text...

 200 Words Rationale:

In my final artwork, I aimed to depict and improve more on movement, contrast, and symbolism while maintaining aesthetic harmony. The waves are designed in an abstract style, with darker tones at the base transitioning to lighter shades at the top to enhance the sense of motion. Gradient in the sky is added to increase depth & vibrance. Swirling lines emphasizes the curling waves, creating a dynamic flow. The boats are repositioned in contrast with the waves, appearing to sail toward the sunset, symbolizing the journey toward peace. Mount Fuji is enlarged as a strong visual anchor, accompanied by the sun and birds to represent stability and freedom.

The inclusion of the quote, “With hardship, comes ease,” reinforces the theme of resilience. The typography follows the wave’s flow, visually integrating with the composition. This artwork conveys how there is always ease after every hardship we go through. The towering wave represents the immense power of nature, while the small boats signify the fragility of human life. It is depicts peace after the problem. 2 boats travelling towards the sunset means travelling to a more beautiful place after a problem. The mountain, sun and birds at the sky background represents freedom, joy and peace.

Design principles used in this final artwork are: the Golden Ratio, guides the eye smoothly from the waves to Mount Fuji; contrast between dark waves and a bright orange sky enhances visual impact; balance and emphasis ensure the waves remain the focal point; repetition and movement create rhythm such as the flowy thick to thin lines & strokes; and harmony and unity link all elements through colour and composition. This artwork ultimately conveys overcoming hardships to find peace.

Breakdown of My Rationale:

  •  Decisions made in my design:
    • In my final artwork, I've decided on making the waves into a more abstract-like painting. I have also changed the positions of the boats, making it more contrast (black-colour) and visible to the viewers and looks like it is sailing towards the sunset.
    • I have added gradients of brown-orange-yellow for the sky background to add more depth and vibrance to the background and make it more stand out.
    • I made the bottom parts of the blue wave darker than the top parts to give more sense of Movement, as well as I added swirls of thin to thick lines to give more sense of motion, showing the waves curling upwards and down.
    • Furthermore, I made the Mt. Fuji bigger in size in the background and added the sun and birds at the back for more elements to make the story clearer. Lastly, I've added a short quote for the text since Mr. Fauzi told me that it would be better to add a text.

  •  Meaning/purpose of the design
    • This artwork conveys how there is always ease after every hardship we go through. The towering wave represents the immense power of nature, while the small boats signify the fragility of human life. The Great Wave off Kanagawa also depicts a life journey. It is about a story of a never-ending process in life where once we have conquered our fear or finished a problem in life, we get what we want or maybe even peace after the problem. In my final artwork, I made the 2 boats look like its travelling towards the sunset as it means that the sailors are travelling to a more beautiful place once after it has passed the scary and crashing waves. The Fuji mountain, sun and birds at the sky background represents freedom, stability and peace.

    • For the colours, dark blue for the waves here acts as a symbol of sadness and fragility, depression, predictability and coldness.
    • Whereas orange and bright yellow gradient and sun in the background depicts happiness, joy and peace.

  •  Design Principles used to create the design:
1. Golden Ratio - The curve of wave aligns with the spiral’s flow, leading the eye naturally from downward and up to the crest of the wave to the foam, to the boats and lastly to the mountain. The highest point of the wave is placed near the Golden Ratio intersection, making the top left the focal point. This makes the artwork naturally pleasing to the viewers. This placement creates a secondary focal point, allowing the viewer’s eye to move from the wave to the Fuji mountain smoothly. The elements of the painting feel perfectly proportioned because of the Golden Ratio, creating a sense of stability, even though the scene itself is dynamic and chaotic. It also helps guide the viewer's eye flow and move across the artwork, making sure there's a smooth and rhythmic flow from on point to another.

(Fig. 7) - showing example of golden ratio in my artwork

2. Contrast - Colour contrast and size contrast is implemented here. The dark blue of the wave contrasts sharply with the bright orange-yellow tones of the sky, making it stand out as it is the main element. The sky’s and waves light and dark gradient adds depth, making the wave feel more three-dimensional. Here, the boats are also small in size compared to the mountain and waves making it feel more dramatic and as if they are tiny beings being attacked by a huge wave. It emphasises on the power of nature too compared to us human beings.

3. Balance & Emphasis - The crashing wave is the largest element in size as it is the main focal point, whereas the orange yellow background of the sky mainly acts like a negative space so that the focus of this artwork is mainly on the waves. The composition is asymmetrical yet balanced. The wave occupies most of the frame, from left to right.

4. Repetition & Movement / RhythmI added many curved strokes of transitioning thin to thick lines for the swirls of the waves to give more sense of motion, energy and movement in the artwork. I wanted the artwork to direct the viewers eyes smoothly throughout the whole composition, moving from the bottom parts and then to the top parts of the waves and lastly, the visual anchor would be the mount Fuji. The curves of waves creates dynamic flow as well. The boats positioned at 2 different points adds RHYTHM, making the scene feel alive and continuous.

5. Harmony & UnityThe elements such as waves, boats and mountain are visually connected through a cohesive colour palette and story, creating a sense of wholeness and looks like one.

6. Scale & ProportionI made the Mount Fuji bigger than the original painting to make it more visible as it is the visual anchor. I made the wave as the largest element in the composition to give emphasis since it is the main focal point for the viewers.

7. Word / Typography I added the text "with hardship, comes ease". The flowy cursive style text follows the motion of the waves, enhancing the message while blending naturally with the composition. "With hardship" is written in blue colour which conveys sadness and gloominess whereas "Comes ease" is in yellow which conveys feeling of joy, freedom and happiness.

Task 3 Reflection..

In conclusion, this final task was abit hard but fun for me. I was able to make a new version for the original painting of "Great Wave Off Kanagawa". I've gained so much deeper knowledge of design principles, and how to explain it when it comes to analysing an artwork. I found it interesting how design principles are used a lot in almost all artworks in the old times. Because of this task too i've explored and discovered new facts about the paintings and what it meant. I had fun creating the artwork overall and implementing more design principles to it so that it can be more appealing to the viewers.
