Final VSP Reflection:

1. Experience

Throughout this semester, the Video and Sound Production module has been a hands-on journey that pushed me out of my comfort zone and into the world of creative media production. Each project challenged me in different ways, from developing technical skills to learning how to work efficiently in a team. The first project was a sound dubbing task where we had to add all audio elements to a silent movie scene. This was my first time manually sourcing, layering, and syncing sound effects, dialogue, and ambient noise, and it made me realize how important sound is in storytelling. Next, we explored sound shaping using Adobe Audition, where I recorded and edited my own voice to create four completely different sounds, based on the ones assigned by Mr. Martin. It was challenging but fun to experiment with pitch, reverb, distortion, and other tools to alter vocal textures. We then moved on to a group trailer shoot in the studio, which was an eye-opening experience into how much effort and coordination go into even a short video. There were so many takes, role rotations, and teamwork involved, from directing and camera handling to acting and lighting. Finally, our 1-minute final project required me and a peer to independently plan, shoot, and edit a short video that included at least two VFX elements. We used Adobe After Effects and Premiere Pro extensively, combining all our technical and creative learning into this final piece.

2. Observation

One major observation was how critical pre-production and planning are. Without a clear storyboard, shot list, or script, we often found ourselves stuck or redoing scenes. I also noticed how powerful sound is, both in subtle background noise and dramatic audio shifts. It adds depth, emotion, and realism to any visual. From the group trailer shoot, I learned that every crew member matters. Even roles that seem small (like managing lights or holding a boom mic) directly impact the quality of the final product. Also, editing is not just about cutting clips: timing, transitions, sound sync, and VFX placement all need to work harmoniously.

3. Findings

By the end of this module, I realized how much effort goes into even a short 1-minute production. I gained a much deeper appreciation for editors, sound designers, and production crews. I also found that learning software like Premiere Pro and After Effects takes practice and patience, but they offer amazing possibilities once you get the hang of them. Most importantly, I discovered that I actually enjoy working with sound and video much more than I expected. The creative process, from idea to post-production, is very satisfying, especially when the final result comes together exactly as envisioned.
